This easy Hocus Pocus sign is a perfect addition to your holiday decor. Halloween is right around the corner, and it’s time to get into the spooky spirit. The small corner of my porch has been left bare, so this year I decided to rectify that. It needed a tall, slim sign to fit in the space, so with a pine board, paint and stencils, I got to work.
Hocus Pocus is one of my favorite Halloween movies, so it was easy to decide what to put on my sign. To keep it simple and legible, I used large letters and classic black and white colors.

Wooden Board For Hocus Pocus Wood
I selected a 6 by 8-foot pine board that my husband cut to 5 feet. I gave all the sides a quick sanding, and then it was on to the paint.
The background was painted using regular black acrylic craft paint that I water down. By thinning the paint, it goes on like a stain, allowing the grain to show through. I used 2 teaspoons of water to 1 teaspoon of paint and mixed. Apply the paint/stain with a sponge brush and let dry.
You could certainly do the lettering freehanded, but I used stencils from Amazon to save time. Don’t get crazy measuring out precisely. I just laid the letters on the board and eyeballed the spacing.
Trace and Paint
Next, trace the letters and fill in with ivory or antique white paint using a small paintbrush. Don’t worry if your painting skills aren’t 100%. This is a rustic sign and not meant to be so purrfect… sorry. After the letters have dried, I went over the entire sign with the sanding block. This gave the paint a more aged looked.
Make a border around the edge of the sign. I measured in one 1/2 inch from the edge and made a pencil mark. Measuring another 1/2 inch, I made another mark and then taped off either side to create a border. With the same white paint I used for the letters slightly watered down, I painted the border with a small brush and removed the tape immediately.
To help separate the letters and words, add a simple dot of white paint using your paintbrush’s end.
If you are leaving the sign indoors, you are done! If you are putting the sign on your porch, I recommend a layer of poly to protect against the weather. Happy Halloween!
