Perfectly Sweet Old Fashioned Lemonade
Lemonade is so amazing that just three simple ingredients can make the most delicious beverage. There isn’t any unique trick or secret to this recipe; it’s so straightforward, so no excuses for using the powder stuff for your next BBQ. Nothing against the powder mix, but homemade is way better. The recipe I made will yield about 8 cups of Old Fashioned Lemonade, so you can easily half or double, depending on your needs.
Ingredients For Your Lemonade
- Lots of Lemons- I needed 15 lemons to yield 1 ½ cups of fresh lemon juice. I used organic lemons, and they tend to be smaller, so if using larger, regular lemons, 8-12 might be sufficient.
- Granulated sugar- for the simple syrup
- Water (divided)- 2 cups will be for the simple syrup and 6 cups to dilute your concentrated lemon and syrup mixture.

How To Make Old Fashioned Lemonade
Start by boiling equal parts sugar and water to make a simple syrup. Over medium heat, I let the sugar thoroughly dissolve and cook for an additional couple of minutes. I found that slightly cooking gives the simple syrup a deeper flavor. Take off the heat and let cool to room temperature. Gather your lemons and giving them a quick roll against the countertop or cutting board. Rolling helps release their juices so that you will get the most out of each lemon. Cut each lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a measuring cup. Since I was juicing so many lemons, I used my convenient KitchenAid juicing attachment, and I was done in minutes. I love this baby when I need large amounts of juice, like a pitcher of orange juice or grapefruit juice for mimosas or a large amount of lemon juice for recipes. Once you have your juice measured out, you can either scoop out the seeds and leave the pulp or strain the juice directly into your finished pitcher. Once your simple syrup is cooled, add to the lemon juice and stir. Fill the pitcher with 6 cups of cold water, and top off with some ice. I like to throw in a couple of lemon halves, so the oils from the peel extract making the lemon flavor even stronger. Serve your Old Fashioned Lemonade over a glass full of ice and sip yourself into summer. |
